Translation Notes From EJ: The Index Librorum Prohibitorum Or List of Prohibited Books, was a list of books banned by the Roman Catholic Church for being lewd or heretical; many editions of the list were published, beginning in 1559 and ending in 1948. Thanks to K, in the comments, for pointing this out. Rudolf of the roses This presumably references Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II. There is a famous portrait of him in which he is made up of fruits, vegetables, and flowers, which presumably is where the roses come in. A theory of human movement that is apocalypse The phrase “jindousetsu” (人動説), which also appears in the Utena duel song “Watashi Kuusou Seimeitai”, has bedeviled Utena fans for years. One theory is that it’s a reference to the use of that term by Japanese artist Ohmiya Masaro for a particular kind of photography unique to him (I would link the forum post that first proposed this, but I can’t find it). It seems Ohmiya wished to take pictures without a stationary perspective, which he felt would be closer to how humans actually perceive things, as humans are constantly in motion–at the very least, breathing. He translated the phrase as “homo-movens theory.” Others have seen the similarity to 地動説 (chidousetsu; heliocentrism) and 天動説 (tendousetsu; geocentrism) and translated it as “anthropocentrism.” The problem with that, though, is that “chidousetsu” literally translates to “earth-movement-theory” and “tendousetsu” to “heavens-movement-theory”–while the English word talks about the thing that’s stationary, the Japanese focuses on what’s moving. Thus “jindousetsu” (human-movement-theory) would not be a theory of something revolving around humans, but of humans revolving around something else. Presumably for this reason, the translation on ohtori.nu coins “anthropoperipherism” as a sort of antonym to “anthropocentrism.” Personally, I’ve elected to keep it simple.
