  • SKU is by nature ambiguous. There's rarely a right or wrong way to look at it — and that's the point. Surrealism is meant to be interpreted, and in interpreting it, a part of you goes into what you see in the show and the characters. So I don't have to repeat it every other paragraph: THESE ARE OPINIONS. I don't mean for my word to be the bottom line, and I'd never want it that way. If you don't agree with some of the material on the site, you're welcome to tell me and we can debate, but do not flame me because I said meanie things about Juri.
  • A lot of effort goes into keeping bias off this part of the site. While it's not possible to get rid of it completely, I *do* try my best — and I think I succeed. You won't see any 'OMG I HATE TOUGA HE'S A JERK BECAUSE I HATE HIM' or 'OMG AKIO DOES NOTHING WRONG I REFUSE TO ACCEPT HE'S ACTUALLY A WUSS' here. Because we all know Touga is a jerk because he's power-hungry, and Akio's a wuss because no one likes getting stabbed with a million swords. But I digress. The point being: this site isn't about me (or anyone else) supporting bias toward the characters, objectivity rules here.
  • Any of you that have attended interviews and panels with the creators of SKU (Kunihiko Ikuhara and Chiho Saito) know one thing: they don't tell you a damn thing about anything. Ikuhara's annoyingly deliberate in this : he knows why Miki's stopwatch is there, he's just not going to tell you. Whatever his reasons are, on this site I basically totally ignore anything he's said about SKU. (Which is not a whole hell of a lot.) I believe the intent was for SKU to be interpreted, so that's what I'm doing.
  • This IS my site, and I'll produce content for it as I wish. If you feel your favorite character is getting ignored, you're welcome to throw me a few ideas for essays. But, if I want to write twenty Akio essays to my one Juri essay, I'll do just that. I won't write analysis out of obligation; it's no fun, and it won't be as good.

  • Spoilers ABOUND. I make absolutely no effort not to spoil the crap out of you on this site. There's really no way to talk about Event A without mentioning Event B. I suggest you avoid the content on this site entirely if you have a problem with spoilers. Consider this your warning!
  • A few acronyms I take as assumed everyone knows. Sorry, blame my time on mailing lists! I'm also listing a few I don't personally use, but I see others use.
    SKU: Shoujo Kakumei Utena
    RGU: Revolutionary Girl Utena
    BRS: Black Rose Saga
    EotW: Ends of the World
    SnH: Sekai no Hate
    SoD: Sword of Dios
  • SEX EVERYWHERE. This is a relatively silly thing to point out, but I've found it necessary: I do not shy from sexual subjects, and if I mean 'oral sex', I will say 'oral sex'. Not 'whenyouputitinyourmouthhehehehe'. If this is a problem for you, you really shouldn't be watching SKU in the first place, and you definitely need to avoid the material on this site.
  • A few things I take as assumed: Miki and Kozue shared some kind of sexual relationship in their youths. Touga and Saionji, as much as most of you wish otherwise, probably never have. Anthy is NOT a sweet, innocent victim of a terrible evil brother. Dios is not a conscious character in the series, he's been 'dead' for a long time. While it's a possible eventuality, I don't think Utena and Anthy are romantically involved during the series. I know none of you like the idea, but Akio and Touga were definitely screwing. And finally: AKIO DOES NOT LOVE UTENA. I may write about any of the above at length, but I've noticed I tend to take them as assumed in essays where they are mentioned loosely, though there's some debate about their accuracy.
  • I DO NOT DRAW CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE SERIES, MANGA, AND MOVIE. I do this because for every connection there is to be made, there's a wild discrepancy. I may write about the connections, but as a rule, I won't use elements from one to explain the other. (If I'm talking about series Touga, I'm not going to refer to movie Touga's getting molested by his father. I won't use Akio and Dios being seperate entities in the manga to explain Dios showing up and talking in the last episode of the series.) Donators are certainly free to do this if they wish, but as a matter of preference, I don't.
  • The above said, my preference is for writing about the series. It's just by far my favorite of the three. You're free to submit what you wish, but just lettin' ya know!
  • I use excerpts from the script quite frequently. These have been stolen from The Utena Encyclopedia.

  • Please send submissions to Yasha! Basically she's going to be judging the essays you send on the same things I judge mine on, but a recap:
  • Essays will NOT be rejected based on their subject matter, no matter how against either of our opinions it is. If you can present a convincing argument, your 'Why Saionji's Evil' essay will go up.
  • No bias, and no bias-based leaps in logic. 'Juri's a strong person because I like her' isn't going to fly.
  • Spelling and grammar is good. So is making sense. These are essays, and they should appear as such. If your evil 7th grade English teacher wouldn't approve, odds are Yasha won't.
  • Please send the analysis in the body of the e-mail, and mention in the title that it's an analysis submission. This makes it easier for all of us, and saves your e-mail from getting deleted.
  • I'll be happy to plug your site with your analysis!
