This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)
All right, I'm hooked... and a certain countess reminds me quite strongly of another conniving blonde...

For those of you looking for information on the net, my friend Maria (probably the world's most rabid Rose of Versailles fan ) has put up a great comprehensive Versailles no Bara site

This here be sweet! Definitely bookmarked.
The live action movie actually looks really decent, judging from the costumes....

BeruBara is all kinds of fun It is not, however, Utena, IMHO.
Does anyone have the opening song? (Bara wa Utsukushiku Chiru / Roses That Scatter in Beauty.) If so, I want! TV or full version -- either is fine. Please PM me so I can send you my email address. Thanks
Edit: Scored it! Thank you!

It's weird hearing French names said in Japanese voices. I'd like to see it dubbed into French (still subtitled of course, as I don't speak French) just for continuity's sake. And maybe then Nanami would seem less like a combination of Mme. DuBarry and Marie Antoinette.

Berubara has actually been dubbed and released in France. There are a ton of French fansites out there for it. I'm not sure how to go about getting it, and if it has English subtitles or not, though.
And well, as for Nanami, I don't think there's any hope for that XDDD

hey!! I'm new to the forum. This is my first post
I am a HUGE Rose of Versailles fan. I was a fan of Utena first... then I got into Rose of Versailles. I have all of it and I watched it all really fast...
I remember they showed some at Otakon, and I stopped by to watch it, and people were laughing at it It makes me sad that it was getting no respect, considering I was left in awe by the end... It's an incredible anime...better than most ever made, and I consider it one of my all time favorites. I even bought the OST AND it hooked me onto Marie Antoinette and the French Revolution which I am now a huge buff on... it's like my 'know it all' part of history (we all have one of those)
there aren't many similarities between RoV and Utena... except for gender roles, and roses, and a very French look...they are two seperate and incredible pieces. If I had to pick I don't know which I'd choose... But I do know that Utena had some inspiration from RoV, and made it it's own...
gosh I could go on about RoV....

I read a bit of the manga. It's a shame it hasn't been published in English yet. Despite being so old it's still great!
Ohh, if only I had more time, I'd like to rewatch RoV too.

The Rose of Versailles is something that every Revolutionary Girl Utena fan should watch (as well as Brother, Dear Brother). I cried when I saw the ending of RoV.
Has anyone noticed a little yet peculiar connection between The Rose of Versailles and the cycle of poems named The Poems of Ossian by James Macpherson, published in 1773? The book has been called the Celtic equivalent of the Classical writers' works.
Those who have not seen The Rose of Versailles should stop reading this. The following text contains a spoiler.
The poems of Ossian (who is presented as the narrator) tell about ancient warriors, members of the royal family and coup d'état. Most heroines are high in rank, brave, young and beautiful. They participate in wars and dress up like men during the battles. This already made me immediately think about Oscar, but what really caught my attention is this: Ossian's heir is named Oscar and he gets killed in the story.
Of course this coincidence is a bit far-fetched, but I decided to mention it anyway.

Only one thing made me think UTENA. p.s, spoilers, I guess?
But I love Rose of Versailles. I finished it recently.

I love this anime! It's consistently good from beginning to end, and with all the limits in the budget, you can feel the characters aging, it's impressive. I showed it to my mom and she loves it too. It's just a strong story with strong characters.

I adore berubara,
Utena is inspired by berubara and oniisama e, which was inspired by ribbon no kishi, which was inspired by Takarazuka which has inspired pretty much every bishounen character in anime/manga the last 100 years of its existence.
Oscar is my all time favourite character so noble so beautiful so fair
and here for the lolz

I plowed through it in a couple of days, just a little while ago and... wow. Oscar, for all of the wonderful things she could do, was lucky to have a strong friend like Andre behind her. Not for the his... (potential spoilers / does it matter when the anime is from the 70's?) questionable pushing his body to the limits, but for his listening to the people around them, as the tides started to turn in France. See, friendship can get you through some shit. I'm looking at you, Utena characters.

I like Roses of Versailles a lot but I have to watch it in short bursts. I think some of it is the amount of stock animation which is totally understandable but can make it easy to lose interest in the visuals.
But really, the drama of it all is a lot to take in. You can feel the seething atmosphere of the politics.

"Too much stock animation..." Somehow I feel like I've heard that charge levied against certain anime before.

I think that's the real strength of BeruBara. It paints a really compelling picture of the evolving setting through its characters. It's not a light show, by any means, but I think it more than earns its drama.

Yeah, I know Utena is charged with that but it's much more egregious in Roses of Versailles. I could qualify how Utena, in my opinion, gets away with it more but it'd be a bit derailing.
No disagreements here. It is a wonderful show. It also does a good job encouraging the viewer to research some of the history of that era, even if it's only at a base level. (And even then there are plenty of fans who have researched it at a much grander scale)
The part with the ink-blot on the wedding certificate was a brilliant source of drama while still taking its roots from the actual events!

I've been meaning to finish Rose of Versailles for ages - except, you know, it's the French Revolution and everyone dies. That's kind of been been stopping me from finishing it, the whole not wanting my heart broken thing D:
Also - still pretty angry I haven't been able to find Les Miserables/Rose of Versailles crossover art. C'mon, idealistic blondes on the opposite political sides? Where is my Enjolras/Oscar art, or do I have to draw it myself. Or heck, Utena/Les Miserables art - the whole "revolution" theme going on in both? No?

While the Anime of berubara is amazing, it still suffered from censorship of certain themes that in the manga were done beautifully.
One of them is Oscar's actual romantic feelings for Rosalie, which she repressed because at the time of the story Oscar couldn't do anything for Rosalie (like marrying her and stuff, which was necessary for a woman at that time if she wanted to survive :/ )
in the manga there are couple of times that Oscar tells Rosalie that she wished she was a man just to be able to be with her, Oscar knew very well about Rosalie's feelings and she was always trying to kick some reality into the girl by reminding her that she was a woman.
their romantic story is so beautifully explored and eventually makes Oscar's feeling more obvious as she gradually understands Rosalie's ones:
SPOILERS ahead
[At the beginning when Oscar still helps Rosalie to find her real mother, Oscar is called to go meet Marie Antoinette, and Rosalie has an outburst, about how Oscar has promised her to look and she can't go now, not even for the Queen herself, that Oscar is always caring for Marie more than her etc Oscar is kind of shocked about this revelation and gives a death glare to the girl. Rosalie understands her mistake of saying too much concerning the queen and says she is sorry but that she wants to go with Oscar anyway.
later on Rosalie will find her younger sister Charlotte who is crying over her own sided love for Oscar (yep another one )Rosalie goes over and tells her, how sorry she feels for her being so young and having such troubles already (with her mother trying to marry her and all) and tells her then and there that she understands her, because she also loves Oscar.
After Charlotte's death when Rosalie's real mother sends someone to go pick her up, and Rosalie tells him that she won't go because her real mom is dead etc, she yells are him to leave, and she drops into Oscar's arms crying. Then Rosalie tries to confess her love to Oscar, but as she is about to say: "I love you Oscarsama" OScar cuts her and tell her, that this house is hers as well she is part of the family she has her like a little sister etc BUT she has to understand that Oscar is a woman. This leaves a completely heartbroken Rosalie, but as I see it, Oscar uses this kind of "cruel"kick into reality for the main reason I mentioned at the beginning of the post and it is more clear in later scenes.
The next moment in the manga that shows how much the love fro Oscar floods is when Oscar, after finding about the gossips around MArie and Fersen and she dresses up in her fabulous uniform to dance with Marie and ask her that for tonight to dance only with her. Contrary with the Anime in the manga Rosalie is there, looking at her love dancing with the queen instead of her, and in tears she runs out, Andre sees her and in all his kindness and understanding, he sees in Rosalie's feelings his very own and tells her, "you poor girl, you really don;t know what is going on, no matter what we feel, Oscar's heart belongs to another man (meaning Fersen), I've been seen this every day for so long" Rosalie takes his hands and pity him for experiencing for years what she does for mere months, they hug and they agree that it is so sad (they unrequited loive that it )
Later in the chapter, when Oscar returns from some fight and both her and Andre are badly beaten, and get a lecture from Andre's grandma
and then the old woman points out to Rosalie and saying that, this girl was very worried about you. Oscar then calls Rosalie into her room, they get into bed, Oscar touches the girl gently and asks her to forgive her for making her worry, then the girl drops into Oscar's arms and cries. Oscar who is very aware of the romantic feelings that are going on there (as mentioned in the previous point), she tells Rosalie, that if she was a man she would take her as her wife for sure, and then shows anger that she can not be a man, for that very reason.
To finally come to their last expression of love, especially from Oscar's side, when the latter learns from Andre that Rosalie is going to Lady's Porniak (or how ever it is typed >< ) house to live with her ad mother and daughter. Oscar becomes an overflowing pool of feelings that she haven't expressed in any other case (such as the moments of love for Fersen, or even Andre's death)
The whole scene goes like this: Oscar grabs Rosalie, and asks her if it is true that she goes to that woman's house, even though she has been so opposed before (Oscar is unaware that Rosalie is blackmailed to go there) and Rosalie in tears tells her that, she seeks for motherly love, even if it is from such a woman, and also that she wants economic power that her mother can offer, which leaves Oscar in shock. That shocking state only turns into angst for Oscar who says in a shaking voice that, her eyes do not deceive her and she can see through that lie, that Rosalie is NOT that kind of girl, and as broken as she is she turns around and tells her that, even though it is such a case she wont stop her, that woman is her mother after all. After Oscar leaves the room, Rosalie drops on her knees crying about her Oscar sama, and has flashbacks from all the moment she had with Oscar, saying how no matter that Oscar is a woman she still loves her and she keep on loving her until her own death, that she wishes for Oscar to not forget her as she wont forget the house that took her in as family, and where she experienced her first love.
The next moment and as it seems Oscar allowing herself to express a romantic moment to Rosalie as a last gift for her, she gives her a painting of herself (seems cocky in a sense but since Oscar at this point she understands how much in love Rosalie is with her, it only makes sense that she gives something that Rosalie would probably wanted herself) and takes her into a hug and gives her a kiss as seen in the picture.

Ah yes... I finished watched Rose of Versailles last month. I even cried at the end.. I also read the manga shortly afterward.

Indeed... The manga was more overt about the Oscar/Rosalie thing. But it couldn't be... not in the 1700s. One would probably be arrested for or exiled for showing any homosexual attraction. I wonder if BeruBara was one of the first shojou manga to show these kinda interactions between female characters.
Oh yeah! Another difference with the manga were some of Andre's actions... Uhm.. Spoiler perhaps? If there are any concerns.
[In the manga, Andre considers poisoning Oscar's wine and killing himself afterwards. So he could be with her in death or something like that. Thankfully, he stops her from drinking just in time. Still questionable behavior.]

You can watch the live action movie on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBbqHwcaNus
Wikipedia says it's really different from the anime but that isn't unusual for live actions adaptions I guess.
I really want to watch the anime now it seems to be really cool.
To the people who have already seen it: Where did you watch it?
