What software do you use to create these icons?

I prefer Fireworks MX's compression, but  Photoshop 7/CS on:
JPG quality 80-100 (!), or
PNG 8 Perceptual/256 colors (probably GIF too)
slices the file sizes on your icons to less than half without any noticeable loss of quality.

Notes:
- Imaginary Bad Bug and Sleep Debt Fairy are very right.  Any image meant to be displayed only a computer monitor should be created at 72 ppi.  This is the resolution of computer monitors.  So you will only be seeing 72 ppi anyway.
- Anime images compressed using PNG or GIF (so that there are fewer colors in the palette) are often indistinguishable from their millions-of-colors counterparts.  They're anime-style and cell-shaded, so there's just not that many necessary colors to begin with.
- Conversely JPG artifacting will usually be more obvious--Romanticide's icon is a good example of that--while some if Z-ko's icons will look better in JPG (like Brand New World below) than with limited colors.

...Those Anthy ones look the same, but they're not.
I have no idea how they different, but I made extra sure to save the two versions...

Those are stunning, allegoriest! I think young Touga and Saionji, Utena with the dress, and butterfly!Shiori are my favorites.

I wanted an icon that I'd made completely myself, so as a result, here's some very basic, very crappy icons.


All boring, all Shiori. Sue me. I really wanted to use the second Shiori on here, but the server is only accepting the first. Somehow, when I saved it in JPEG, it didn't ruin the image. However, the others did. *shrug*

I feel so untalented/un-1337.

It's official. The internets hate me. And I'd just made another using a different image that worked. Oh well, now I'll just have four pointless icons.

I just noticed that the Black Rose Duelist Shiori icons are black and white, while the Rose Bride Shiori icons are rose colored[well, with the saturation reduced, they aren't really rosy. But they began that way]. And, they go in order of Duelist, Bride, Duelist, Bride. I must have a very systematic subconscious.
