This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)

Good question(Move/Merged if is in the wrong forum)

Does anyone know where I could purchase the remastered Box sets here in australia.
The only thing that Madman distributes here is the movie which is shit in comparison to the tv series
So does anyone here know anyone that distribute the anime in australia.
Update#1: The Tv series is finally getting a release in Australia: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com.au/pres … girl-utena

This may not apply to Australia and/or you, or maybe I'm off-base. It's certainly not the best answer anyways, so I'm sorry about that, and you may have known anyways, but it does look like you can get the remastered version of Utena on I-Tunes, if I didn't misunderstand their site? Which obviously isn't the same as grabbing the boxed sets, but it's close. And you can still burn it onto DVD's.

http://utena.rightstuf.com/
--> Order Now --> Down load on I-Tunes link.

I've kind of wanted to get the remastered DVDs too... just it feels so wasteful spending ~$150 US for something I (more or less) already have.... especially with it being christmas time, and me having bought other stuff for myself. And stuff for others. There's only so much shopping I can do before I feel guilty. But I waaant.

Anyways, hope you're able to get a better answer from someone else. Good luck!

Amazon will ship to Australia, yes? I don't know what the international shipping expense is (there doesn't seem to be an Australia-local Amazon), but it's an option.

And the movie ain't shit. It's the shit.

Get it right. emot-mad (emot-tongue)

Re: Good question(Move/Merged if is in the wrong forum)

Is the DVD sold on Amazon localized for the US and/or Canada? (Do they still do that awful regions thing with DVDs?)

Unsure. But worth checking out before you order.

Amazon seems to have some decent prices on at one of the sets.... maybe I (and others) could shop around here/there/everywhere and trim it down from 150 to 100 by buying the individual boxes seperately.

It's been my experience that a lot of anime DVDs, despite claiming a region encoding on their packaging, aren't actually coded for region and play on everything.

I don't know that's true for the SKU DVDs, however.

Also if I remember correctly in Australia it is legally required to unlock dvd players for all regions if you contact the manufacturer.

You can't.

As far as I'm aware, the only Utena that's licensed for Australian distribution is the movie, and this license is indeed held by the ubiquitous Madman. Unless you buy the American releases from a shop that specialises in third party imported merchandise (and there aren't many of those around either) you cannot buy any Utena anime from a store.

At this point you've three options:

1. Download
2. Buy the region-free pirate DVDs from eBay
3. Buy the official sets online and region-hack your DVD player

Wish it were different, but that's the way it is. I'd be ecstatic if Madman- or some brave company prepared to brave their wrath and massive market domination - picked it up, but frankly, I think it's probably too marginal/limited cult appeal for them.

We can hope, however. emot-frown

EDIT: Yes, they do indeed still code DVDs according to region. However, given that just about any DVD of- well, everything, really- is available, distributed and licensed in America, regions aren't really something any US consumer needs to worry about it. I've sent Australian region DVDs as gifts overseas before and yes, they tend not to work on locked US players.

Yes the show is finally getting distributed in Australia emot-dance

It would be reasonable to assume the three sets will be the same if not similar to the North American release from two years ago; but the news announcement does not say anything about the film - a point of concern, and one I will probably ask someone at the Hanabee stall at SMASH! 2013.

Even if its the same release that america got 2 year ago it better then nothing etc-saiowank

Re: Good question(Move/Merged if is in the wrong forum)

Hi Rosesareawesome101,

Good to see you saw my post on EvaGeeks. Cheers for quoting it here.

Though I'd like to place additional emphasis on the 'not sure about the movie' bit. It was not all that long ago that Madman still held the rights for Adolescence - in fact they still have the trailer for it on their site, even though they don't have the DVD listed - and Madman's rights to the film will have had to have expired in order for Hanabee to have any hopes of including the film with the third box set like it was in North America. Point being: if the remaster film isn't included in the remastered box set series, it more or less means that the film will be out of print in Australia (& NZ).

That being said, I'll keep an ear on this where I can and will post here if I hear any further details about the Australian release.

[also it would be dandy if the thread title were renamed so people know what it is about ^.^]

Re: Good question(Move/Merged if is in the wrong forum)

Another compatibility issue to consider is that Australia uses the PAL TV system, the US uses NTSC. This means that the resolution and frame rate are different. school-eng101

I remember when I lived in the UK (PAL), most consumer TV & VCR equipment would play NTSC VHS tapes. However when I got to Canada (NTSC), I found that PAL-compatible equipment was rare and expensive. So check that your TV and DVD player are NTSC compatible before buying any US DVDs, region locked or not.

If Australia uses the PAL system, does that mean these DVDs will work in the UK?

Yes, except it's a different DVD region, so you still have to get around that somehow.

Wikipedia explains it in detail:

^You could get a multi-region DVD player. However, that, plus the cost of the DVDs, could get expensive...

Through my experiments on other people's locked DVD players, I can tell you that most, if not all, UK DVDs will work in Australian players. I don't know if it works both ways, however. I do know that computers will spit out pissy little messages about compatibility when it comes to swapping between PAL and Region 4 DVDs, however. My advice? Go on Australian eBay, find something cheap and experiment for yourself. I am surprised that the UK doesn't have a SKU release by now, the market is certainly bigger.
