Wasn't meant to be cold. Despite somehow always getting every girl they come in contact with, visual novel protagonists are usually extremely average, thus giving him two very common names in English and Japanese.

It would be the opposite of Tanaka Yubiseiharukana from Ever 17, who was given a very unusual first name because her father felt bad that she had such a common surname. I remember her first name out of spite.

I say Ask Her If She Has a Girlfriend. I'm sure it's what Ikuhara would have wanted. She calls D-ko by her first name, and suddenly gets questioned out having a girlfriend.

When the series continues, Utena goes back to using "-san" to address Kanae and Shiori, because in side she's thinking, "If I call her by her first name will she think I'm into girls and in front of Anthy and the chairman what if I get kicked out of school for that oh my god oh my god *paranoia*."

It all makes sense.
