The second soundtrack covers the background music, duel choruses, and opening and closing themes of the Black Rose Saga (aka Kurobara Hen), spanning episode 14-24. Both the opening Rondo-Revolution [Rinbu-Revolution] and first closing Truth are featured here in their TV length. Virtual Star Embryology as an ending theme is covered on this album, with full length and karaoke versions of the J-Pop style rendition of it. Also here is the version of Absolute Destiny Apocalypse used in the Akio and Apocalypse Arcs.

The background music takes a dramatic turn for this arc, with songs like Nemuro Memorial Hall, Eternal Secret, and Fruit of the Sin helping to set the shifting dramatic weight of the series. The duel choruses are still performed by the same group that recorded the first arc’s, and it’s perhaps for this reason that Mikage’s duel, I Am An Imaginary Living Body, which is recorded by Seazer’s theater group, 'Theater Laboratory - Universal Gravitation' [Engeki jikken-shitsu - ban'yū inryoku], appears instead on the next soundtrack. The Black Rose Saga duels are largely very short, and very fast. An oddity in the track listing appears where the duels, which are presented in sequence, have Keiko’s duel chorus Transparent Period of Adolescence as track 6, before Wakaba’s Magic Lantern Butterfly Moth 16th Century, as track 7. Wakaba duels (episode 20) before Keiko does (episode 21) in the series, and I can’t help but speculate that this might have been the intended order and something changed in production.

A note: The given names are predominantly based on the Utena Translation Project's original translations of the songs. Where a song title has become widely accepted as different, ie. The Sunlit Garden instead of The Sunny Garden, I have used the more popular name. Punctuation has been altered to better match the Japanese tracklists.

The "Comparison" options when available are side by side multiple translations, romantization, and Japanese, depending on availability. They're an awesome and surprising resource, and I hope you check them out.

Ancient times, perfect, solitude in the desert
Air, atoms, the planet of causality

Yes, a native child
Conception
The embryo of philosophy

Egg, perfect, the origin in the nest
A stamen, a pistil, one seed

Yes, a native child
Growth
The child of philosophy

And
Lunar Heaven, Mercurial Heaven, Venusian Heaven
Solar Heaven, Martian Heaven, Jovian Heaven
Saturnian Heaven, Sidereal Heaven, Motive Heaven

Further circular infinity without end
A kind of organic engine
A kind of perpetual motion device
Ah, lost motion
I'm a lost motion

And
Lunar Heaven, Mercurial Heaven, Venusian Heaven
Solar Heaven, Martian Heaven, Jovian Heaven
Saturnian Heaven, Sidereal Heaven, Motive Heaven

Further circular infinity without end
A kind of organic engine
A kind of perpetual motion device

Translation by Robert Paige, Yasuyuki Sato, &

They can be divine spirits,
they can be evil spirits

Ah, even if Heaven's vapors were brought here...
Secret thoughts can also be virtue!
They can also be vice!
Ah, even if Hell's bewitching atmosphere were carried here...
As long as such suspicious forms do come,
they shall have a dialogue!

On a moonlight night already severely cold,
might a spirit leave its body!

A mystery beyond the ken of humans,
and humanity, dwarfed by their Creator,
is made to tremble in fear at the sight!

There are good spirits and
there are bad spirits.

Aah! Even if the fragrance of heaven is brought here.
In the depths of hell there is good
and evil, too!
Aah! Even if the salt of hell is carried here.
Since the forms cloaked in doubt are coming,
speak profoundly.

Though it's false, like the brilliant moon...
I wish to keep my treasure close.

A wonder beyond man's knowledge.
People of the world, so small, feel fear.
That form is the field of battle.

My childhood when I was so adorable.

Making a lotus carpet,
Playing with dolls,
A mysterious charm, Fi! Fi!
Candy
I wore a beautiful kimono
Children's Festival

Oh, my dream machine...
Flowerstorm
To the faraway ancient me,
Ten, two, one, zero...
Take off!

Time Machine
To the past, to the future, whoosh, zip, zoom!
Time Machine
To the time of all my dreams and wishes

Hair tied back,
toting a box lunch,
A mysterious charm, Fi! Fi!

Surprise! Surprise!
These are all my soul

Oh, my dream machine...
Dreamstorm

Earth as a Character Gallery
Translation by Robert Paige &
          Utena Translation Project (1998)

Twin relationships are the
capricious, heartless lies of desires
propagating endlessly in the
interval between two mirrors.

Ah, man does not exist.
Ah, within the darkness
Ah, the sound of the waves

Even light casts shadows,
making a pair out of me and me.
Isolation outbreak,
that's the reason making a pair out of me and me.

Twins,
twins-in-law,
Scheming twins,
absent twins...

Since we see the invisible,
The contrived world rises to the surface.
Amusement apparatus and optical illusions,
Then contrived world rises to the surface.

Earth is a contrivance of personalities
Earth is a toybox of personalities
Earth is a department store of personalities
Earth is an exhibition of personalities
Earth is a museum of personalities
Earth is a curio box of personalities

Earth is...

The infinitely opposing relationship
in the interval between two mirrors.
The evergrowing desires and
the fickle, cruel lies.

Aah! Man does not exist
Aah! Within the darkness
Aah! The sound of the waves...

Even light makes darkness
I am opposed against myself!
Outbreak of loneliness, that's the reason...
I am opposed against myself!

Twins.
Step twins.
Scheming twins.
Absentee twins.

To see what can't be seen
a scheming world surfaces.
Made of gaming equipment and painted backdrops
a scheming world surfaces.

A philosophical existence
The domain of mainstream magic's
Grand Guignol

A normal sigh, a heavy sigh,
an anxious sigh, a grieving sigh, a pleasured sigh...
I gather my breath,
store up my breath,
through a magnifying glass.

Heavy sighs and normal sighs and

heavy sighs and normal sighs and
anxious sighs, grieving sighs and pleasured sighs and

Hahahah!

Energy does not exist, in any form!
Useless energy does not exist at all!

Ubermensch - mechanism drawing breath
Ubermensch - flesh model of humanity
Ubermensch - analysis of endless layers
Ubermensch - transcendent synthesis

Ah! Ah! Celestial revolution.
Ah! Ah! Existence composition.
The birth of a new species?
Or the limit of human potential?

Everywhere, clocks are ticking.
Even here, my heart is pounding.
A hammer that strikes time;
Bam! Bam! Bam! Bam!
I, the time traveler, will open the door!

In anything, there is no energy at all.
In everything, there is no wasted energy

The Absolute Being! A breathing machine!
The Absolute Being! The anatomical model of flesh
The Absolute Being! Like peeling the layers of a shallot
The Absolute Being! A supreme synthesis

Ah! Ah! The Celestial Revolution.
Ah! Ah! The synthesis of existence.

Vanish! Fade away! Melt away!
Get out of my sight!
Any and all people!
Vanish! Fade away! Melt away!
Get out of my sight!
The instant imposters.

Betray by a hope
Vengeance through a wish
I'm sick of the time of such an era

I run away
Get lost- everything!
I no longer want anything!

Driving a driverless side car
An imaginary journey of three thousand miles
Subway, high speed, airport
Let's go 100 miles an hour
Mysteriously powered, a gale, a fugitive

Magic Lantern Butterfly Moth 16th Century
Translation by Robert Paige, Yasayuki Sato, &
          Utena Translation Project (1998)

Oh, the pity! Although the aged man
put all his strength
into his skillful sword,
How pathetic his skill is in his age...
He misses his target, sword swishing through the air,
staggers and falls,
oh, that old man.

A shrieking sword swish,
Troy's castle tower,
and the burning summit was rent asunder,
with a thunderclap.

Paris was deafened
temporarily.

Witness! The white-haired old man,
raising it as if to cut,
holds his sword up in the sky,
and Paris is petrified.
Paris soon regains his hostility,
and brings his blood-stained, dripping blade
down upon the aged king

Oh, how pitiful
The man puts all his power
into his familiar, old sword,
but his aging arms feel pity.
His aim falls short,
the old man staggers
and falls as the blade whiffs.

The howl of the sword's swing.
The Watchtowers of Troy
with flaming tops flash with lightning
and come crashing down.

Pyrrhus becomes
deaf for a time.

Behold! White-haired old man!
The sword raised to slay you
has frozen in the sky!
Pyrrhus is completely still!
But after a moment, Pyrrhus' animosity returns
And his hot-tempered sword of blood
takes aim at the aged king, and cuts him down.

08. Rondo - revolution (TVsize) [1:35]
Wheel Dance - revolution (TV length)
Translation by Verthandi

Let's go on living, bravely and with style...
Even if the two of us are ever separated...
Take my revolution!

In the sunlit garden, holding hands,
We drew near and consoled each other.
We said we'd never fall in love again.

In that photograph of us,
standing cheek-to-cheek,
A touch of loneliness fills our smiling faces.

Even though we dream, even though we cry,
even though we hurt ourselves,
And reality approaches frantically,

I want to find my place,
the worth of my existence.
From this day, I will take myself and

Bravely strip down to nothing at all,
Like a rose spinning free.
Even if the two of us are ever separated,
I will change the world.

Let's live heroically, let's live with style.
Even if the two of us are torn apart...
...take my revolution.

In the sunlit garden, we both joined our hands.
Drawing close for comfort, we both swore:
...never again would we ever fall in love.

I see that photo of us
standing cheek to cheek...
...and place a bit of my loneliness in our smiles.

Even if I dream, even if I cry,
even if I get hurt...
...reality keeps on coming recklessly.

I wanna find my own place,
the value of being
the person I've been until now...

Let's find the strength to throw it all away.
Strip down to nothing at all.
Become like rose petals, blowing free!
Even if the two of us are torn apart
I swear that I will change the world.

Laugh and laugh the whole day through
And half the summer’s night!

Missing truth & forever
Kissing love & true your heart
Hold me in your arms so true
Reality is the key to tomorrow
I want to keep destroying lies

Although we've said this much,
you still can't see

Excuses are suited to grown-ups
Who still cling to fairy tales
Unchosen angels even have no
   need for wings

Missing truth & forever
Kissing love & true your heart
I believe that I'll love myself tomorrow
And because I want to believe,
I want to be hated by lies

I want to be hated by lies.

Virtual Star Embryology (Full Length Closing)
Translation by Robert Paige &
          Utena Translation Project (1998)

Ancient times, perfect, solitude in the desert
Air, atoms, the planet of causality

Yes, a native child
Conception
The embryo of philosophy

Egg, perfect, the origin in the nest
A stamen, a pistil, one seed

Yes, a native child
Growth
The child of philosophy

And
Lunar Heaven, Mercurial Heaven, Venusian Heaven
Solar Heaven, Martian Heaven, Jovian Heaven
Saturnian Heaven, Sidereal Heaven, Motive Heaven

Further circular infinity without end
A kind of organic engine
A kind of perpetual motion device
Ah, lost motion
I'm a lost motion

And
Lunar Heaven, Mercurial Heaven, Venusian Heaven
Solar Heaven, Martian Heaven, Jovian Heaven
Saturnian Heaven, Sidereal Heaven, Motive Heaven

Further circular infinity without end
A kind of organic engine
A kind of perpetual motion device
Ah, lost motion
I'm a lost motion

Ancient times. Perfection. Isolation in the desert.
Atmosphere. Atom. Causality star.

Yes, a child of earth is
conceived.
The embryo of philosophy.

Egg. Perfection. The origin in the nest.
Stamen. Pistil. A single seed.

Yes, a child of earth
grows.
The child of philosophy.

And then
lunar heaven! Mercurian heaven. Venusian heaven.
Solar heaven. Martian heaven. Jovian heaven.
Saturnian heaven. Stellar heaven. Motive heaven.

And then... The endless surface of the torus.
A single organic mechanism.
A single perpetual motion machine.
Ah, it is empty movement. Just empty movement. Empty...

Kunihiko Ikuhara
director

The world is chaotic and indistinct. However, even in such a world, there is certainly a definite existence in this world. Even though they certainly clearly exist in this world, they appear to be too beautiful, unsightly ugly or simple daily lives so that their true characters are vaguely accepted. I don't wish to deliver such a concept intelligibly through arranged and analyzed animation.

I don't wish to extract only the parts where the cels could be expressed numerically or lines could be articulated. If anything, I'd rather display unclear parts that can't be expressed numerically or lines that can't be articulated by using a picture to show such things indeed exist as clearly as chaos. — I respect Mr. Mitsumune and Miss Kamiya. I undoubtedly believe those two clearly showed the existence of such a world.

Although I am basically an optimistic person, on the day I received a phone call from my old friend Mitsumune-san, who's one of today's shining stars, I was feeling depressed because of the decreasing number of people hanging around me since last spring. "This time around, we're going to work on the animation show called Revolutionary Girl UTENA and... mumble, mumble..." If there was a god who threw me away, here was a god who picked me up... Unknowingly, "the power to do a revolution" appeared to be working out in my life since I gave him my response, "please let me do it!"... From that moment on, I started to receive contacts from many of my long lost friends and people started to appear around me. After the beginning of the recording session, I realized that there was a rather inevitable fate, more than coincidence, oddly tangled up as I encountered people with whom I became involved with on UTENA. I've met many members of the staff previously on different occasions apart from my work, starting with Director Ikuhara who owned an album from a rock band that I used to belong to... With each recording session, I could no longer describe "Revolutionary Girl UTENA" with the word "work." When I was appointed to sing a new ending theme song, "Virtual Star Embryology," my head was going "%@%*!#@%??"; However, I somehow got the point.

If a stranger heard it, it'd be considered a coincidence, however, it was all "inevitable" for me.

After the end of recording, those "inevitable" things brought me a revolution with immense power. am certain that the answer to that will be my precious weapon for my future. I believe I now possess "a sword" that I can bring out from inside myself at the time I need to fight a duel.

And also, is it too good to be true that the release date of the album is on my birthday...?!

Shinkichi Mitsumune
music

I was astounded by the drawings from the UTENA project report that was given to me at the end of last year. What type of music could I give to such beautiful characters? Then, when I met with Director Ikuhara for the first time, he talked to me about interesting and difficult to understand topics and said, "Taboos that are hidden in the daily gaps in our lives." I pretended to understand what he was talking about at that moment, however in my head, I was confused. (The Director said, "I'm glad to have a musician who understands such topics." But, I was actually just pretending to know what he was talking about.)

-I see, at least I somehow understood it would be a strange story. (sweat)

I kept in mind three main focal points of "feelings of sharpness," "Beauty," and "pleasures of betrayal." I decided to detach myself from the project, regardless. certainly wanted to avoid the heavy expressions. I wanted to include some beats that always skillfully evaded something. In other words, all of the music of UTENA are "jokes with elegance?" to me.

Also there was the encounter with Mr. J.A. Seazer's music. My preconceived ideas were entirely torn apart by his music. I wonder if there's any other music created with such free inspiration. I believe that something like his music is what the words for which true originality were made for. I also faced the reality of the fact that I was the one tied up with horse sense. The musicians who performed Mr. Seazer's music played their instruments more freely through their own interpretation to deliver me a sense of freedom. After all, perhaps the somewhat "feeling out of joint" sensation provided by Mr. Seazer's music ignited their spirits of musicianship. They might have thought that they wanted to show a coolness of their own.

Another by-product of producing music for Mr. Ikuhara were the meetings with other people, namely Ms. Asako Tsushima, the conductor and director of the Suginami Children's Chorus. She was so cool that she did not even flinch and managed to perfectly conduct even 7/8 or 11/16 tempos!! A scene such as this recording session would be a special memory given only to people who were involved with the project. Right in front of my eyes, there were these high school girls wearing mini skirts and loose socks singing with pride as professional singers singing such a hard rhythm track. How cool they were!!! At the end of the session, Ms. Tsushima asked me, "is this program okay for these girls to watch?" She was probably sensing some kind of danger from the music...

The dream that I have now is to hold a live concert for "The Revelation of Absolute Destiny." Shall I have Maki Kamiya, the main vocalist, masquerade in Nanami's costume? The members of the Suginami Children's Chorus, will wear uniforms and loose socks (of course, I'll request Ms. Tsushima to conduct). I'll have the members of the Tokyo Mixed Chorus wear tuxedos. Then we'll do a competitive performance with "Universal Gravitation" led by Mr. J.A. Seazer. If you wish to come to the live concert and sing "The Revelation of Absolute Destiny" together with us, please send a post card to the personnel in charge of the project at STARCHILD. (I wonder if it's okay to write something like this at my own discretion???) Then take care of yourself and good-bye until we see each other at the phantom live concert.
